About
Cassie Flynn is the Director of Climate, Energy, and Environment at the United Nations Development Programme, leading one of the world’s largest portfolios on climate change, energy, nature, and pollution prevention at the United Nations Development Programme. On the ground in nearly 150 countries, the portfolio is the foremost supporter of countries to achieve the Paris Agreement, Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework, and Montreal Protocol.
Over a 20-year career, she has advised Presidents, Prime Ministers, CEOs, and high-level coalitions, played a central role in the Paris Agreement process, and directed large global initiatives that translate international commitments into country-level action. Her signature leadership includes steering the Climate Promise, a UNDP initiative that helped 90% of developing countries enhance and deliver their Paris Agreement pledges – raising mitigation ambition, strengthening adaptation and resilience, and embedding energy commitments into national plans.
She has received multiple awards for her work – including being recognized as a Trailblazing Woman on Energy by Reuters, one of the most influential leaders on climate change by Onalytica, and a Jane Jacobs medal. She was a member of the World Economic Forum’s Future Council on Just Transition and Advisory Group on private sector investment in adaptation.
A trusted communicator and convener, Cassie is a frequent speaker at global fora, including TED, Web Summit, and SxSW, UN Summits and major conferences, and is regularly featured in international media. She has created innovative advocacy campaigns – including the award-winning Peoples’ Climate Vote – with diverse industries in film, television, music, and gaming. She was featured as an expert on climate change on ABC’s Shark Tank.
She aims to combine technical depth – anchored by a master’s degree from Yale and undergraduate degrees from Bowdoin – with an ability to translate complex challenges into clear, actionable solutions for leaders and practitioners. She is dedicated to inclusive leadership and building coalitions – from frontline communities to national policymakers to the boardroom – to build a better future for all.
